The customers raved about the food while I was there and it is made in the authentic Mexican tradition. La Reinas recently won the award for Uvalde’s Business of the Month by the Chamber of Commerce.

People come from many miles around to purchase the tacos, gorditas, and homemade tortilla soup. In fact, Live Oak Gorditas was voted number one for South Texas! Open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM, you can order ahead to pop in and pick up. While you were waiting you may notice that numerous newspaper articles posted on the walls praising this restaurant over the years. The reputation for good food goes way back. The addition to the building to make a seating area is not fancy, but it is adequate for a few people.

There is a daily special and you may select from a variety of enchiladas (beef, cheese, or chicken), or fajitas served on Fridays. These specials run from $5.99 to $7.99. The Palms, Close to the interstate and located next to the Catapillar company, The Palms restaurant is easy to find. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 to 9 PM, and Sunday from 7 AM until 2 PM. The Palms is located at the V in the road at Court Street and West Kingsberry.
There is plenty of parking here. Featuring a different lunch special every day between the five and six dollar range it’s an expensive place to eat. There’s a great variety of entrées to choose from such as the enchilada plate with three enchiladas for only $6.99, or the Fajita plate with beef chicken or pork, onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, rice and beans, all for $7.79. Las Palmas A former Dairy Queen restaurant that has been converted to a Mexican food restaurant now, Las Palmas Cafe offers a different daily lunch special for $6.99 Mondays through Friday’s. Fajitas on Monday, Enchiladas on Tuesday, Porkchop plates on Wednesday, Tacos on Thursday, and Chalupa’s on Fridays, and other menu items are offered. Or if you can’t decide, try the Taco, Chalupa, Enchilada, Combination Plate for only $7.99.
The bench seats are hard but the food is good and inexpensive.

Las Mananitas A great place if you are hungry! The place is open Tuesday through Sunday from 6 AM until 2 PM. The restaurant is in a nondescript yellow building approximately 1 mile off the I 10 highway. Tacos are their specialty however there are lunch specials available every day for $7.99. They include a bottomless giant glass of tea. Try the combination plate or the enchilada plate. The food is good and is served on large platter style plates. You may even want to split a lunch or take home half of your meal for supper, as they serve a big portion.
While the building is not fancy and a little bit off the beaten path, it is easily accessible to Highway 10 and there’s plenty a room for parking. It’s a great place to stop if you’re wanting a good meal and are needing to get off the highway for a break.

Jackies Tacos This is a great place to stop by and order Barbacoa by the pound to take home, or one of Jackie’s favorites, such as the quesadilla or deluxe taco plate. The special of the day is under six dollars and includes a drink. Moderately priced, this little restaurant has a special each day posted on the counter top and hand written with a sharpie.
The food is also made fresh when you order. No menus here, just order of the signboard. There’s only 5 tables so it can get busy at the noon hour.

El Ranchito This is the beautiful Mexican restaurant with a lovely outdoor patio area and full bar in a separate room, equipped with jukebox and fireplace. It would be a great place to host a party. Very clean and nicely decorated, El Ranchito would also be a great place to take someone you would like to impress, for a business meeting or a couples night out. Choose from appetizers, soups and salads, tacos, items from the grill, specialty dinners, or Tex-Mex items to order by number; there’s a wonderful variety to choose from. Try the Fajitas for two for $20.95 which includes beef or chicken, grilled onions, bell peppers, rice, beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, and shredded cheese.
Don’t want to share? Order a single plate for $11.95. Kids can have hot dogs, grilled cheese, hamburgers, or enchiladas as well starting at $4.95. There’s also sour cream enchiladas, a favorite, served with rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, and chicken topped with Ranchero sauce, for $9.95.

Alex’s Tacos Alex’s tacos is a quirky little place in an old white building at 1214 N. Guadalupe Street. Some of the menu items are hand painted on the wall outside the building. If you walk around to the side there is a takeout window and a full menu near the sliding glass window where you can run up to grab a bite to take home. You can also enjoy sitting under the tree in the parking lot at the picnic table with the kids. The outdoor window will remind you of a food truck at the fair. If you’re looking for more of a restaurant atmosphere, there are half a dozen tables to choose from, (the entrance can be found on the other side of the building).
The days special is $6.50 and includes a sweet tea or lemonade. Try the enchilada plate, crispy tacos, porkchop ranchero, or quesadillas. There are over 50 items on the menu to choose from with about half of them containing eggs. Whether you like scrambled, over easy, or eggs cooked with dried beef and jalapeños, potatoes chili or onions, they can serve them up in a variety of styles. You may choose from a regular size or a small plate for the person who is not quite as hungry. And there are kids bowls for only $2.00!
