Tulia, Texas is a one horse down directly off of the long Amarillo Highway (good old 87). Tulia is home to some odd 5000 hardworking souls (4903 as of the 2013 census), who some where along the way wanted to live somewhere between Lubbock and Amarillo. Not a huge place, but it is God’s country, so flat, that you could watch you dog run away for days. A trip to Tulia is a trip to the Great Plains of Texas! Donut Palace Drive-Through, The Donut Palace was a former gas station converted to a doughnut drive-through. While it states “drive-through”, you will probably want to go in and select your items from the glass case where you can see them. They have a good selection of donuts and other pastries for breakfast, brunch, or even your kid’s birthday party. The red and white checkered floors add to the interest of the building. Lums BBQ It’s unexpected to purchase fantastic barbecue at a convenience store/gas station. But Lums has pulled it off! Featuring brisket, sausage, pulled pork, turkey, and ribs, Lums stands out from the competition. Greeted inside the door by the chalkboard, you can make your selection there and then order over the counter. The meats are on display for you to see. Do you takeout, and pick up a few groceries while you are there, or eat at one of the picnic tables in the rustic wood room.
There are more tables outside in the courtyard under the awning or out in the privatly fenced area. Sandwiches start at $6.49, or buy a whole family pack of meat by the pound. You can even order spicy spaghetti as a side, or pick a more traditional one like potato salad or coleslaw. Lums is a fun place to eat.

The Palms, Close to the interstate and located next to the Catapillar company, The Palms restaurant is easy to find. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 to 9 PM, and Sunday from 7 AM until 2 PM. The Palms is located at the V in the road at Court Street and West Kingsberry.
There is plenty of parking here. Featuring a different lunch special every day between the five and six dollar range it’s an expensive place to eat. There’s a great variety of entrées to choose from such as the enchilada plate with three enchiladas for only $6.99, or the Fajita plate with beef chicken or pork, onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, rice and beans, all for $7.79. They also have catfish, chicken strips, or chicken fried steak for folks who are not in the mood for Mexican. Great food at an inexpensive price.

Las Mananitas A great place if you are hungry! The place is open Tuesday through Sunday from 6 AM until 2 PM. The restaurant is in a nondescript yellow building approximately 1 mile off the I 10 highway. Tacos are their specialty however there are lunch specials available every day for $7.99. They include a bottomless giant glass of tea. Try the combination plate or the enchilada plate. The food is good and is served on large platter style plates. You may even want to split a lunch or take home half of your meal for supper, as they serve a big portion.
While the building is not fancy and a little bit off the beaten path, it is easily accessible to Highway 10 and there’s plenty a room for parking. It’s a great place to stop if you’re wanting a good meal and are needing to get off the highway for a break.

Jackies Tacos This is a great place to stop by and order Barbacoa by the pound to take home, or one of Jackie’s favorites, such as the quesadilla or deluxe taco plate. The special of the day is under six dollars and includes a drink. Moderately priced, this little restaurant has a special each day posted on the counter top and hand written with a sharpie.
The food is also made fresh when you order. No menus here, just order of the signboard. There’s only 5 tables so it can get busy at the noon hour.

Giuseppes Italian Restaurant This is such a unique place, and even if you are not hungry you need to step inside the door and take a look. The ceilings are painted like sky, and there is a cathedral at the top of the stairs. You truly feel like you are in Italy. This restaurant is very unique and and beautifully painted with murals. It was an unexpected surprise because it is next-door to a service station. This is true Italian food, and the owner is Italian and has been serving up wonderful dishes for many years.
Lunch specials are offered Monday through Friday from 11 AM until 3 PM. Such favorites as lasagna, cannelloni, chicken parmesan, chicken alfredo, and manicotti, are starting at $6.95. The entrées come with spaghetti and include a variety of veal, ribeye, chicken, or shrimp. The special for the day when I was there was lobster ravioli served with garlic bread. Pizzas are also available from 12 inches to 18 inches with a variety of toppings for $8.99 For the small, and$16.99 for the large.

The Asian Buffet specializes in Chinese Cuisine and Mongolian Grill and Sushi. Dine in or take out. Open Monday through Saturday from 11 AM until 3:30 PM for lunch; Monday through Thursday from 3:30 PM until 9:30 PM and Friday and Saturday from 3:30 PM until 10 PM for dinner.
