Los Alamo’s sets off Main Street in a plain blue building, however, you will discover upon entrance that there are two separate dining areas and lots of wait staff to serve you. Established in 1993, this restaurant is very busy and popular. They have a lunch special daily on the chalkboard, and on the day I went, it was a Taco Plate, with your choice of chicken or beef, with rice and beans, for $5.99. The menu is Tex-Mex, but also includes steaks, catfish, burgers, and salads. The chips and salsa were fresh and delicious. For $4.99, the children can choose from five items as well, if they don’t just fill up on chips! Prices range from $5.99 for a burger or the Daily Special, to $15.99 for a T-bone. Ofelia’s Mexican Restaurant – Menu – Uvalde

 

Ofelia’s Family Restaurant This is a super hot spot at lunchtime. And while it is one big room and quite noisy, the food makes up for that. There is also covered outside parking which was unique in itself, so it’s a good place to stop on the bad weather day and get a great meal. Easy to access for disabled people who can pull right up under the cover and go straight in. Ofelia boasts it’s claim for being an authentic Mexican restaurant but Ofelia’s also offers BLTs, hamburgers, oyster platters, and seafood platters, as well as salads. House specials also include a Pork Plate and Cabrito Plate $12.89.

If you have never had Cabrito this could be the place to try it! So the sign is deceiving since there is a lot more to Ofelia’s than just Mexican food. When you go to Ofelia’s you may want to get there a little bit before the lunch hour or after. This restaurant was extremely popular and one had to wait for a table to become free at lunchtime, and try to stay out of the way of the numerous people picking up to-go orders as well!

Obviously well-liked in the community! Go check out Ofelia’s on the far west side of town!

La Reina is in an old brick building on the south side of Main Street. It appears to look more like a small ma and pa convenience store when you walk in. Their homemade tortillas sit on the countertop and all of their food is freshly made in the back ready for you to pick up. There is a table outside with a few stools under the awning by the doorway, but this is definitely a takeout spot and there are no tables inside. The customers raved about the food while I was there and it is made in the authentic Mexican tradition. La Reinas recently won the award for Uvalde’s Business of the Month by the Chamber of Commerce.

Tacos start at only $1.25 so you can’t go wrong here. Chicharron, carnitas, and barbecue are available by the pound. And of course, there is Menudo. Get a styrofoam cup of beans, and just grab a bag of the homemade tortillas on your way out the door after you pick up your take-out order and you’re good to go!

Donut Palace Drive-Through, The Donut Palace was a former gas station converted to a doughnut drive-through. While it states “drive-through”, you will probably want to go in and select your items from the glass case where you can see them. They have a good selection of donuts and other pastries for breakfast, brunch, or even your kid’s birthday party. The red and white checkered floors add to the interest of the building. Order one or several dozen! Just a few blocks off Main at 300 S. Getty St., Uvalde.

Johnny Gringos All American Restaurant Open from Sunday through Saturday 11 AM to 10 PM, Gringos is in the same building as a former Churches Chicken. While the restaurant still has some resemblances, it has totally been remodeled to have a diner/ pub atmosphere with tin walls, nostalgic neon beer lights, and flat screens on almost every wall. The tables are high with bar seats. It is a nice unexpected surprise when you enter, as you would not expect this in the same building as a convenience store and gas station/laundry mat. Happy hour is from 6:30 PM to 10:00 pm and with wings at $.69, it looks like a fun place to drop by in the evening. Of course they serve food all day long, and you order at the counter off the menu board when you walk in the door. The specialties consist of a variety of hotdogs and Mexican Margarita Candy.

From north to south, Gringos has you covered. You can get a New Yorker Dog with grilled onions and sour kraut, or the Chicago with mustard, pickles, relish, and tomatoes, or the Mexican Hotdog with pico de gallo, chili, cheese, mayo, and mustard. And there is even the Breakfast Hotdog , that surprisingly comes with an egg and hot sauce. Only in Uvalde! Not brave enough for that? Then try the chicken wings or have a burger. Its a great place to catch up with some friends or watch a game.

Guys, you can throw your laundry in the wash in the laundry mat next-door, grab a fun supper and a beer with the boys, and go back and take care of your business when the commercials are on during the game.

Live Oak Drive Thru draws a crowd, to the drive-through that is, since there is not a lot of space inside to sit. This restaurant is famous for its take out rather than for inside dining. People come from many miles around to purchase the tacos, gorditas, and homemade tortilla soup. In fact, Live Oak Gorditas was voted number one for South Texas! Open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM, you can order ahead to pop in and pick up. While you were waiting you may notice that numerous newspaper articles posted on the walls praising this restaurant over the years. The reputation for good food goes way back. The addition to the building to make a seating area is not fancy, but it is adequate for a few people.

There is a nice fire burning stove to take the chill off. But your best plan is to grab your food and head home, in case a handful of people may be dining there, or waiting to pick up their food, since there’s only a few wooden tables and chairs available. Choose from an assortment of meats including brisket, Carne guisada, smoked sausage, picadillo , steak ranchero, chicken fajita, and more. Make it a plate for $9.75 and it will include rice, beans, and tortillas.

Lunkers Grill Located at the Inn of Uvalde, the chef at Lunkers has been cooking up meals for over 23 years. With humble beginnings working as a cook, he worked up the ranks to become a fantastic chef and is now the owner. His wife also plays a part in the restaurant, with a small boutique near the cash register area. Lunkers has it’s claim as being a “world famous” mesquite and grill restaurant, but if you ask the locals, their favorite is the Chicken Fried Steak.

The Catfish Dinner or New York Strip Dinner can also be specially prepared for a party, at $13 per plate if you want to have a large group there. There’s also the I Love New York Steak for Two. This includes steak, salad, chips and salsa, baked potato, and a vegetable, for $25. Lunkers has plenty of parking, and you can sit in the back for a view of the swimming pool, or in one of the booths to the side for comfort.

There is a bar next-door that adjoins the restaurant, but you must have a membership to enter. Casual dining, and a great steak deal for couples!

Plumley’s Pecan Company and Store Plumley’s looks like an old-fashioned country store inside. There is a large room in the back of the building for parties. Sit at the old fashion stools at the bar and enjoy a milkshake with a friend or grab a booth by the window, or shop the interior for some interesting items that you can’t find elsewhere. This includes pecan oil, comparable to olive oil but according to Plumley’s, much healthier for you. From fruit cups, turkey wraps, chicken salad, and grilled avocados, Plumley’s is watching out for your health and offering an awesome selection of interesting foods. Feeling naughty? Try one of their burgers loaded up with bacon, and grab some chili cheese taters. Check out the Muy Grande, with smoked turkey, ham, avocado, bacon, American cheese, tomatoes, and mustard, on your choice of bread, sourdough, or others to choose from. This comes with kettle chips, all for $6.95.

Cooper’s Barbecue Cooper’s has a very interesting Decor of taxidermy on all of its walls. There are many exotic animals that you will not see anywhere else. It’s like a mini museum. It’s worth the stop just to see them. Located right off the interstate, Cooper’s is easy to access, and there is plenty of room for big rigs to pull in. This is the type of restaurant where you grab a tray when you enter and pick up your food on the way down the line, and pay at the end. Help yourself to the sodas and especially the barbecue sauces. There are two different types to try. The meat is displayed in a glass case when you enter the door, and you will be enticed to order more than what you can eat. Priced by the pound at $13.99 for any type of meat, it’s hard to decide. Plates are $12.99, or get a combo plate with two different meats for $14.49. Grab a comfortable booth or sit near the window.

Either way the Moose is watching you! Take in the rustic feel of a large hunting cabin while you enjoy your meal, served up on wax paper. Check out the state historical, or rather hysterical marker outside.. but before you leave be sure to grab a BlackBerry or peach cobbler desert, served in the single size, pint-size, quart size or a whole dessert for $21.99. Cooper’s is a fun place to check out, even if you just stop for a quick drink, it’s worth taking a break from your drive on the highway to go in and see the interior. It’s a family tradition since 1953, and is open from 10 AM to 9 PM seven days a week.

Lums BBQ It’s unexpected to purchase fantastic barbecue at a convenience store/gas station. But Lums has pulled it off! Featuring brisket, sausage, pulled pork, turkey, and ribs, Lums stands out from the competition. Greeted inside the door by the chalkboard, you can make your selection there and then order over the counter. The meats are on display for you to see. Do you takeout, and pick up a few groceries while you are there, or eat at one of the picnic tables in the rustic wood room.

There are more tables outside in the courtyard under the awning or out in the privatly fenced area. Sandwiches start at $6.49, or buy a whole family pack of meat by the pound. The Milky Way specializes in variety of hamburgers including one with caramelized onions and blue cheese dressing. Burgers are $6.10. Best of all though are the cream and fruit pies. Select one from the glass case. They also serve at breakfast early and you can choose from a variety of omelettes or pancakes.

There are half a dozen tables inside or use the drive-through window for pick up.

Open 7 AM to 7 PM Monday through Thursday, serving up burgers and fries and old-fashioned shakes. On Fridays, however, it’s steak and seafood night. And Saturdays they reopen from 11 to 2 for lunch.

Hildago’s Restaurant has several locations, including 2020 S. Bryant Boulevard, 1315 N. Chadbourne, and 3108 Sherwood Way. They’ve been serving up American and Mexican food for a long time, and are proud to prepare your dish just the way you like it. While not a fancy place inside there is original artwork and paintings of the restaurant in bygone years.

The tables are quite with plastic table covers. The menu offers specials for children and senior citizens including  $4.75 for a grilled cheese sandwich with fries, up to $6.25 for the burrito served with rice and beans. American food consists of chicken fried steak, chicken fingers, ribeye steak, steak and shrimp, a fish dinner, and a diet chicken plate with salad and toasted bread. Prices range from $7.50 to $13.

For Mexican fare, there are two pages in the menu for a large variety to choose from, including a Deluxe Dinner with one cheese enchilada, one beef enchilada, one taco, one chili rilano, beans, rice, and guacamole for $9.00. Or check out Armandos Special with carne asada, beans, rice, hot jalapeño, and a slice of avocado on the side for $10.25.

While the menu states “American and Mexican” fare, the restaurant primarily serves Mexican food. It has award-winning fajitas, and numerous Mexican favorites such as the Mexican Village, three Copitas filled with beans, guacamole, and beef or chicken with rice on the side, for $8.39.

There are a variety of steaks including Steak Ranchero, a spicy ribeye steak topped with famous Ranchero sauce, cheese enchilada, and flour or corn tortillas.

The Don Juan special, Carne Asada with grilled jalapeños, avocado slices, and flour or corn tortillas. Or try the Steak Durango, a ribeye steak with bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and guacamole with tortillas on the side. Your choice for $16.75. Gills also offers mixed drinks, beer and wine, sodas, and tea. They will deliver for a $10 charge if you can’t get out.

Interested in something different? Try the Cambodian cuisine at Donutopia. Served from 11 AM until 5 PM, select from the fresh stir-fried ginger chicken on steamed rice, stir-fried eggplant with sausage on rice, Phnom Penh Noodle soup, or Cambodian Curry stew.

There is also a Cambodian barbecue and grilled fish on the menu. And of course, Donutopia also serves all kinds of donuts, all flavors, and colors to choose from. It’s hard to decide between the donuts with brightly colored sprinkles, or the old favorite, chocolate donuts. The awards are not posted on the wall but the owner will tell you that they have recently won awards for outstanding food.
